Porcelain inlay and onlay

Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

In dentistry, inlays and onlays are a form of indirect restorations, which means they are made outside of the mouth as a single, solid piece that fits the specific size and shape of the cavity and then cemented in place in the tooth. This process generally takes two visits. Inlays lie inside the cavity of the tooth and do not extend towards the chewing surfaces of the tooth like Onlay does.

Inlay and onlay are an alternative to a direct retoration (filling), that is built up in one single visit.

Dental Inlays and Onlays offer a reinforce and superior solution for teeth which need stronger protection than a filling can provide. Unlike a Dental Crown, Onlays and Inlays cover only  the part of the tooth structure lost, making them less aggressive treatments. Onlay and Inlays are the preferred option of treatment.

Inlays and Onlays are durable, long lasting, and less likely to discolour over time. In fact when good oral hygiene and regular dental examinations are maintained, a patient can expect a substantial length of life.

Inlay / Onlays can be made either from ceramic or metal (gold).  The dentist will help you to decide the best option for material according to  specific dental needs.

They are indicated when:

  • Large cavities where there is limited tooth structure
  • Heavy grinders to protect further wear
  • Strengthen root canal treated teeth
  • broken, decayed and fractured teeth.
